ATS Resume Checker: Why 75% of Indian Resumes Get Auto-Rejected (and How to Fix Yours)

You spent hours on your resume. You applied to 40 companies. You heard back from two. The problem might not be your experience — it might be that your resume never made it to a human at all.

What Actually Happens When You Apply Online

When you submit a resume on Naukri, LinkedIn, or a company's careers portal, here's the actual sequence:

  1. Your file is ingested by the ATS (Applicant Tracking System)
  2. The ATS tries to parse it into structured fields: name, email, experience dates, skills
  3. If parsing fails or the score is below threshold → automatic rejection, no human review
  4. If it passes → a recruiter sees a parsed summary, not your original PDF

The key insight: the recruiter may never see your carefully formatted resume. They see a text dump. If the ATS mangled your resume during parsing, the dump looks broken — and you're out.

The Top 5 ATS Mistakes Indian Job Seekers Make

1. Multi-Column Resume Templates

Canva, Zety, and dozens of Indian resume builders produce beautiful two-column layouts with a colored sidebar containing contact info and skills. These look professional. ATS systems hate them.

When an ATS reads a two-column PDF, it reads left-to-right, top-to-bottom across the full page width — so it mixes sidebar text with main content text. Your "Skills: Python, SQL" ends up next to "Jan 2022 – Present" from the work section, producing garbled output that scores near zero.

Fix: Use a single-column format. It looks simpler but gets through ATS reliably.

2. Creative Section Headings

Using "Career Journey" instead of "Experience," or "Academic Background" instead of "Education," or "What I Bring" instead of "Skills" — these headings confuse ATS keyword matching.

Fix: Stick to: Experience (or Work Experience), Education, Skills, Projects, Certifications. Plain and standard beats creative every time.

3. Scanned PDF Instead of Text-Based

Many freshers scan their printed resume and attach the image PDF. ATS cannot extract text from a scanned image. Your entire resume reads as a blank document.

Fix: Always export directly from Word or Google Docs as PDF. If you only have a scanned copy, retype it.

4. No Dates on Entries

Every job and education entry must have a date range. Without dates, ATS systems either mark the timeline as incomplete or calculate work experience incorrectly.

Fix: Format as "Jun 2021 – Present" or "Aug 2019 – May 2021" on every entry.

5. No Action Verbs

ATS keyword matching is more effective when verbs are present. "Responsible for managing a team" scores lower than "Led a team of 8 engineers."

Fix: Start every bullet point with a strong verb: achieved, built, led, delivered, improved, reduced, launched, managed, developed, optimised.

Do Indian Companies Actually Use ATS?

Yes — at scale. Some data points:

  • TCS, Infosys, Wipro process tens of thousands of applications per hiring cycle. Manual screening is impossible. ATS handles the first filter.
  • Amazon India, Microsoft, Google India use enterprise ATS (Workday, Greenhouse, Lever) with strict parsing requirements.
  • Naukri and LinkedIn parse your uploaded resume into their database — if it parses badly, keyword searches won't surface your profile.
  • Campus placement portals (CampusRecruiter, TalentEdge, Superset) used by IITs, NITs, and top B-schools also parse resumes for recruiter search.

The short answer: if you're applying to any company with more than 50 employees in India, assume ATS is in the pipeline.

1. Multi-Column Resume Templates

2. Creative Section Headings

3. Scanned PDF
